As the location of the historic Col. J.M. Barker home, the Fairmount neighborhood features many older homes built in the 1940s-60s, as well as several built even earlier. A portion of the neighborhood has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. King University, founded in 1867, is also located in the Fairmount neighborhood.
